Healing whispers, where mind, body and soul are one

Animal Totems

One of the first empowerments sort after on the shamanic path is the obtaining of a power animal, or totem animal. The last stage of our separation from the Creator into a profane world was the loss of our animal natures in favor of a rational, scientific view of the world. With the animal nature, was lost our intuitions, self-preservation instincts, reflexes and many hidden strengths.

To explore inner worlds, we need the animal powers. These powers also help us deal with the practical world. It is the animal in us that reacts before we can think in an emergency, that senses trouble or deception, that is responsible for incredible feats of strength in times of danger, and draws us towards what will benefit us. When it is lacking, we get misled into giving our power away to others, to putting other needs before our own, losing our self worth, and falling into patterns of martyrhood or apathy which further disempower us. The obtaining of a power animal restores our motivation, self-worth, survival instincts, quick reflexes, strength, protection and intuition.

Each person resonates with a different animal. This animal is already part of our spiritual make-up. Finding this animal is the first step to power. Once you are in touch with your own unique animal, you begin to use its senses and its powers.

You can easily attune with your animal spirit by keeping a picture of it handy, meditating with it and asking it for help. Take a moment to feel its presence with you during the day. Each human being has nine totem animals that represent their special talents and skills that were brought into this life experience or Earth Walk. Each one of these creatures brings into life a special skill or attribute that you carry with you.

When you are in tune with your totem animals you can receive messages from them to help you as you Walk the Path here on Mother Earth. Native American belief states when you are incarnated here for the Earth Walk you have seven directions surrounding your physical body. These directions would be East, West, South, North, Above, Below, and Within. The direction called Within exists within you and around you since you have an entire universe inside your consciousness. (More on that in future articles.) Each one of these seven directions has a corresponding totem animal that you have been blessed with to aid you in your Earth Walk by teaching you the lessons each one of the directions brings. There are two other totem animals that walk with you, one is on your right side and the other is on your left side.
